Back in 2014, I was working for an environmental laboratory in Southeastern Pennsylvania, collecting water samples with a utility van.
One day I stopped at a local gas station near Kennett Square for lunch. I had returned to my work vehicle with my food and, still parked in the gas station parking lot, was checking my work phone for updates when I heard a knock on my driver-side window. I looked up, shocked by the sudden sound, and saw a short, 60- to 65-year-old man smiling at me.
I rolled down my window just a few inches, nervous that a stranger was trying to talk to me while I was on my work shift.
He greeted me and said, "I just wanted to come over and tell you that I saw you walk out from that convenience store with a golden aura around you as you walked back to your vehicle. I am an angel coming to tell you that I see such light in your life, and wanted to mention that you are on a successful trip in and that everything is going to be okay."
He asked me a few questions, but I don't remember all of the specifics since I was so shocked and overwhelmed by what he had said. I turned away, briefly, to look at a notification on my work phone, and when I turned back to speak to him again, the man had disappeared. He was not in the parking lot, near my vehicle, or anywhere to be found.
I was greeted by an angel that day.
I will never forget that feeling.
A few years later, I discovered the song “Gold” by Koven. The lyrics ask if we take things too far when we tell ourselves we don't believe or “pretend.” They reveal that while we have a shadow where we tend to lose ourselves, there is also a power to help us when we are lost or confused. “Something to make [us] feel alive.”
I can't get through listening to this song without thinking about the moment that man knocked on my window.
Being touched by an angel provides personal courage, comfort, and security “worth [their] weight in gold.” I believe that angels live within me and can sense my energy in this world. It makes me feel as if I am alive and powerful!
But this isn't about whether or not you believe in God or angels.
It’s about how we are all connected, and we are all on this planet to help and be kind to one another.
This song is a reminder. ◆

I met Courtney on my first day of high school
We were in the same French class, sitting next to each other in assigned seats. I was fifteen years old and trying exceedingly hard to hide how nervous I was to be starting at a new school.
I scanned the room trying to register all the new nameless faces around me. Everyone was a stranger. Everyone seemed standoffish. Then I spotted Courtney.
Courtney is one of those people who you can tell is a good one before you even hear her speak. She emanates a warm authenticity, the kind that makes random tourists ask her for directions or trust her to take their photo.
Genuine, real, kind. Maybe it was her blueberry hued L.L. Bean backpack or her curly hair springing around in a friendly bun, but I remember thinking, “She seems nice.”
We hit it off instantly… Keep reading→
