Here comes the sun
When I was 11 years old, I got a new morning routine. I started waking up “like a grownup:” using an alarm clock and showering before leaving the house each day.
In my mind, I was switching from little kid to almost-teen. It was time to act like an adult and I took it very seriously.
A critical part of my new 6am regimen was listening to music. My morning song of choice? Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5.” I blasted it on repeat for 20+ minutes daily as I showered and got ready for school.
Tumble out of bed and I stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition
And yawn and stretch and try to come to life
Jump in the shower and the blood starts pumpin'
My child-brain loved imagining what “a cup of ambition” would look and taste like (glowing red and maraschino cherry-flavored is what I decided).
Something about listening to music as the sun was coming up made the unpleasantness of how dreary I was seem tolerable. I felt like Dolly and I were in it together.
Good Morning Playlist 🥞
In honor of Dolly helping me wake up each morning, I made you a playlist full of songs to get your day going. I hope it gets your blood flowing and helps you start your day off on a cheerful note.
Recommended listening: sing along (loudly) in the shower 🚿
