One of my earliest memories
I’m less than two years old, being held in the air by both of my parents. They’re swaying me back and forth, smiling, singing along to “Duke of Earl,” Gene Chandler’s first hit.
In less than a year, my dad will pass away from cancer. The three of us are in our house in a small Colorado mountain town called Evergreen, where we lived before my mom and I moved to D.C. three years later.
When I was a baby, my parents used to play this Billboard 1962 Top Rock’n’Roll Hits album on repeat. One of our most-listened to tracks was Gene’s “Duke of Earl.”
As I grew up, “Duke of Earl” became one of my favorite songs. It was easy for my kid-brain to remember the words. I loved how simple it felt to sing the repetitious “Duke, duke, duke, duke.” It was so fun.
To this day, any time I hear that song, I get intense pangs of nostalgia. Gene Chandler’s music colored the only two years I had with my father before he passed away, the only two years where my mom, my dad and I were a trio. Gene’s music will always have a sacred spot in my heart.

It felt like a party
Whenever my mom and I listened to ABBA Gold, we had a good time. It was a greatest hits 2-disc album that we kept in the car for 10+ years of my childhood.
What added to its value in my mind was that the CDs themselves were shimmery and golden, so my child brain thought they were maybe made of… gold?

Struggle and healing in post-apartheid South Africa, and the song that brought Khanyi Mlaba's sense of purpose to life — No. 026 - Bright Blue's "Weeping" changed my life
This song has been a beautiful beacon to me my whole life. It sounded like a distant party that I've always wanted to be a part of. It's elegant, fun, romantic and feels like a world I WANT to live in. What a song!
